Graham Cracker Crumbs

Ok, unfortunate title I know, but I couldn't resist this opportunity to poke and prod a frail, incoherent old man. That's right I'm talking about old school evangelist Billy Graham. He recently brought his classy brand of fire and brimstone to our beloved city of sin. Among the many nuggets of wisdom he bestowed on the faithful:

As the US continues its battles in the Middle East, the Rev. Billy Graham told the nearly 80,000 who saw him in Queens on Saturday that wars are justifiable. According to the Bible, Graham said, "God has no beginning, but we have, and the war doesn't increase deaths. If you think about it, we all are under the sentence of death. We all are going to die. We all need to be ready to meet God". [from Metro New York newspaper]

Wow. Um, not to bite my thumb at thou Reverend. but doesn't that kind of justify killing just about anyone, provided you have sufficient faith? I'm no pacifist or nothing, I say nuke all those haters of freedom, but the worst possible justification I can imagine for war is that God said we should do it in this here book. I think I would even prefer the rosier profit-driven scenario put forth by Chomsky and his comrades, though the only truly good reason I can think of for sending US soldiers to fight and die is to address a demonstrable threat to US security. More on the Iraq war in a previous post
